Besides watercolor painting, another thing that I am very passionate about are senior citizens, especially those who are affected by dementia.
I have been a family caregiver for approximately twenty years. It started out by helping my mother as she cared for my father who had numerous medical issues. After he passed away, my mother needed assistance and so she moved in with me. The first few years, she required minimal help but then her needs increased dramatically and I had to hire caregivers so that I could continue to work. We have been through a lot together and it has impacted my life in many ways. Some good – some not so good, but I know without doubt that I would do it all over again.
One of the good ways it affected me was helping me to see the great and growing need that exists to support the elderly as well as their families who struggle to care for them. This caused me to redirect my career in marketing to a new industry – senior care. It was a great choice that has led to much personal satisfaction in my work.
My present role is Marketing Director at Fellowship Square Historic Mesa, www.fellowshipsquareseniorliving.org/campus/az/historic-mesa/ a non-profit residential community providing independent living, assisted living, memory care and a variety of supportive services. Holding the hands of residents and family members as they make difficult transitions to a higher level of care can be rewarding but it can also be heart wrenching – particularly when memory care is needed.
Memory care is for individuals affected by dementia who are no longer safe in an unsecured environment and need care 24 hours per day. Dementia is the deterioration in memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to perform everyday activities. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S, affecting 1 in 3 seniors by the time they pass away.
Reflections Memory Care at Fellowship Square Historic Mesa https://www.fellowshipsquareseniorliving.org/campus/az/historic-mesa/floor-plans-and-prices/memory-care/ offers an environment that is as welcoming and comforting as it is safe. They offer a program of activities to help residents remain connected and engaged. Their certified caregivers have an in-depth knowledge of the specific needs of those with memory impairment as well as the individual residents’ background and preferences. Both are key to providing quality care that helps residents feel understood and to maintain comfort.
As dementia progresses, it is an extremely difficult journey for those affected. Providing the highest level of compassionate and insightful care possible is so very important. As a non-profit organization, donations are critical to supporting the staff in this effort.
Here is how you can help! When you purchase anything from this website, 10% will be donated to the organization and directed specifically to the Fellowship Square Historic Mesa Reflections Memory Care community.
As Mother Teresa said, "Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love." On behalf of the residents, the staff and families who care for them, I thank you in advance for your purchase and your contribution.
Fellowship Square Historic Mesa is part of Christian Care Companies, the largest non-profit senior living organization in Arizona. They serve over 2,500 seniors at 5 communities located in Phoenix, Tucson, Historic Mesa, Mesa and Surprise. www.christiancare.org
